Club Volleyball

What is Club Volleyball?

  • Club volleyball is the term used to describe the competition circuit devised and operated by the USAV (United States Association of Volleyball) at the Junior Olympic level. Teams are based on age and range from 18-and-under to 12-and-under; however, some clubs do allow younger girls to play-up into the 12 year old bracket. Tournaments are held throughout the United States, finishing with a National Tournament that crowns champions for each age bracket (18s, 17s, 16s, 15s, 14s, 13s, 12s). There are currently over 200,000 girls playing on club teams throughout the nation.
  • Club volleyball is often used to improve a player’s skills as well as prepare them for scouting and recruiting for the potential to play volleyball in college.  Such involvement often allows a player to have more face time with college recruiters or even get “discovered” at a tournament.  Because many tournaments have multiple teams and age groups in one location, high profile tournaments and high profile clubs become a perfect place for college recruits to scout many players at once.

Should I play for a club?

  • While many clubs boast a high percentage of their members being offered a scholarship or going on to play college volleyball, joining a club volleyball team is not necessary to get recruited.  However, because club volleyball allows players the coaching, court time and face time (for recruiters), it seems to be the most direct approach to both improve a players skill level and increase the possibility of them being noticed and, maybe even get recruited.
  • Ultimately, both the player and the parents need to evaluate the player’s goals in volleyball (improving skill set, getting recruited, scholarship, recreation etc.)  Club volleyball can be expensive when both membership fees, travel costs (player and family) and time are included, so choosing to play for a club team is a decision that needs to be carefully considered.
